The blast occurred in the rear commercial vehicle parking lot of the westbound plaza at mile marker 202.5 in Hopewell Township, Cumberland County, at approximately 4:55 a.m., authorities said.
A preliminary investigation revealed the explosion was caused by a propane leak inside a 2003 Ford RV with Delaware registration, troopers reported. The vehicle was destroyed in the incident.
One person inside the RV was injured and transported by EMS to Penn State Health Holy Spirit Medical Center for treatment, police said. The extent of their injuries was not disclosed.
The explosion also damaged several commercial vehicles and service plaza property. Responding agencies included local fire and EMS units, Pennsylvania Turnpike Safety Units, H&J Towing, and the Pennsylvania State Police Fire Marshal Unit.
No further details were immediately available as the investigation continues.
